Gypsetters are a breed of modern-day travelers who are reviving the free spirit of gypsies and combining that with the ease and convenience of air travel around the world to discover destinations and cultures that are new to them—both experiences that arguably can’t be had when you simply stay put.

The ’60s and ‘70s were a time of non-conformism for young people throughout the Western world. Thanks to a travel route established by British scientific explorers a decade before, hippies and young people flooded the Hippie Trail, which was a sometimes-treacherous but well-traveled route from Istanbul to India. This was when air travel was still relatively new.

En route, they did not stick to traditional hotels or typical tourist routes. Instead, they tried to interact as much as possible with each other and locals—treating their journeys as a cultural and spiritual adventure rather than a set of predetermined experiences. The glory days of the Hippie Trail came to an end in 1979. Since then, the Hippie Trail has lain dormant. Some countries have been cut off from the route and, for the most part, Western tourists.

There is something in the air today, as a new generation of young people are taking to the road and searching for a similar strain of non-conformism. Today, gypsetters are taking to the road, reviving the Hippie Trail. With airlines connecting all the major stops along the way, it’s faster and more convenient for the off-the-beaten-path traveler of today to set out along the Hippie Trail in search of adventure.

Borgo Egnazia

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel chose this most idyllic location of Borgo Egnazia in the Italian village of Savelletri de Fasano in Puglia for their honeymoon. In the undiscovered corner of Italy the couple welcomed guests such as Jimmy Fallon and musician Timbaland. Borgo Egnazia is a castle-like and candle-lit dream setting for a wedding of A-list celebrities. Celebrities flock to Claridge’s for a taste of British tradition. The doormen are having a hard time to keep up with the names of the endless procession of stars popping up at this famous hotel in London. Just off New Bond Street in London Mayfair this traditional luxury hotel opened its doors in 1898. Claridge’s is a seven-storey terracotta-faced behemoth that has long been a favourite stop for statesmen, film stars, aristocrats and supermodels. Much of Claridge’s success results from an Art Deco renovation in the late 1920s. Recent guests include Kate Winslet, Poppy Delevingne, Kate Moss, Sarah Jessica Parker and Diane von Fürstenberg.

Italy’s Amalfi Coast is one of the most picturesque place on earth, and it’s here that you’ll find the legendary Le Sirenuse in the village of Positano. 6 stunning design hotels that make you addicted to Iceland

Iceland is probably not the place where you expect boutique or design hotels. The country of glaciers, volcanos and hot spring is well-known for hiking or other outdoor activities. So why should I find stylish hotels there? However these design boutique hotels on Iceland exist and they are great, so great that they can make you addicted to the beautiful nature and the vibrating capital town of Reykjavik.

ION

The ION Hotel is the only hotel in the Þingvellir National Park. The Islandic owner Sigurlaug Sverrisdóttir extended and renovated the old workers’ quarters of the Nesjavellir geothermal power station and turned it into a fabulous design hotel. (from 250 € – 45 rooms)

Right in the heart of Reykjavik the 101 Hotel is located. The owner and designer Ingibjörg Pálmadóttir has created a chic and cool design hotel out of an old office building from the 1930s. (from 270 € – 38 rooms)

Kvosin

Siolim House

Siolim House is a classically restored Goan Portuguese mansion built in 1675, refurbished in traditional colonial style. In 2001, the hotel–which boasts of being “unlike a hotel in every way”–was a finalist in the Asia Pacific Awards for Restoration by UNESCO and received an Award of Honor. Smart travelers aren’t afraid of Tuscany in the winter: It’s hunting time

The wild boar is fresh and the cheese is rich. Truffles and mushrooms and chestnuts abound. Even in the cool temperatures of winter, when the rainy days are not uncommon, Tuscany comes alive with bright colors that put every other winter destination to shame. And, when the tourists all but disappear between the ancient cities of Florence, Pisa, Lucca and Siena – it’s then that locals come out of the woodwork, unhindered by throngs of wine-hungry crowds and restaurants serve up the season’s finest ragùs.

The star of that meaty pasta sauce is the wild boar, or il cinghiale, as its known locally. Hunting season is between November and January throughout Tuscany, and locals take this season very seriously, especially when it comes to wild boar who wreak havoc on wine and other crops before harvest time is through. As an animal that is known for eating pretty much anything, the boar has few natural predators anymore, which means that Tuscans have no qualms about making sport of taking them down and cooking them up. Birds and rabbit are also hunted at this time of year.

There is no easy way to define boutique hotels. There are a number of qualities that these charming hotels of the world share, but they offer an experience that’s better understood in-person rather than by a definition. But, we can try to explain that “you’ll know it when you see it” feeling and where it comes from by first exploring what a boutique hotel is NOT.

If you’re staying somewhere that’s…

Cookie cutter accommodations,
Part of a chain,
Dull, with inside-the-box design,
Filled with too many rooms,
Impersonal,
All inclusive, or
Pretty much just flat and soulless

…then you are not staying at a boutique hotel. Keep looking, though! These hip hideaways can be found almost anywhere in the world that visitors would want to go (we can personally attest to that…). In our travels, we came across more secret retreats and small luxury hotels than we can count, and while we do still believe boutique hotels are better defined through seeing than explaining, we’ve compiled a few traits they all share:

Getting this out of the way: yes, a boutique hotel is tiny, with no more than 50 rooms and no less than ten (otherwise, it would be an inn or b&b). Their size gives these great small hotels a distinct air of intimacy and personal touch that large hotels just can’t offer.

A true boutique hotel is also one-of-a-kind and independently owned. These indie hotels are distinct from cookie cutter accommodations. They have a style and personality that is truly unique and enhance their guests’ experience of the destination. Boutique hotels tend to be hip, with trend-setting clientele and forward-looking design elements. Because the décor is unique to the independent owners, it is not designed to appeal to the masses but instead a specific crowd of adventurous travelers with a taste for authenticity.

These hip hideaways are dedicated to hyper-attentive service. Because they include personal touches that large hotel chains can’t match, the best boutique hotels in the world pride themselves on their top-of-the-line, personalized service.
