16 exotic hideaways where gypsetters escape the 9-5

Gypsetters are a breed of modern-day travelers who are reviving the free spirit of gypsies and combining that with the ease and convenience of air travel around the world to discover destinations and cultures that are new to them—both experiences that arguably can’t be had when you simply stay put.

The ’60s and ‘70s were a time of non-conformism for young people throughout the Western world. Thanks to a travel route established by British scientific explorers a decade before, hippies and young people flooded the Hippie Trail, which was a sometimes-treacherous but well-traveled route from Istanbul to India. This was when air travel was still relatively new.

En route, they did not stick to traditional hotels or typical tourist routes. Instead, they tried to interact as much as possible with each other and locals—treating their journeys as a cultural and spiritual adventure rather than a set of predetermined experiences. The glory days of the Hippie Trail came to an end in 1979. Since then, the Hippie Trail has lain dormant. Some countries have been cut off from the route and, for the most part, Western tourists.

There is something in the air today, as a new generation of young people are taking to the road and searching for a similar strain of non-conformism. Today, gypsetters are taking to the road, reviving the Hippie Trail. With airlines connecting all the major stops along the way, it’s faster and more convenient for the off-the-beaten-path traveler of today to set out along the Hippie Trail in search of adventure.

Fashionable boutique hotels with roots in natural surroundings and local culture have found their place among exotic destinations around the world. These destinations, and the gorgeous boutique hotels you’ll find there, are the epitome of chic luxury for the modern day gypsetters.

Today, gypsetters seek out the best in style and luxury all over the world, without limitations.
For boutique hotel lovers, there are no such things as boundaries.

Tell us: What are some of your favorite boutique hotels in these stylish destinations for gypsetters?

6 mind blowing hotels even celebrities fell in love with

Spend a night in any of these luxury retreats and you might just bump into your famous Hollywood star at the breakfast buffet, meet a rock star sipping a cocktail in the hotel bar, or even share an island with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. We picked some of the most stylish hideaways and hotels where celebrities love to stay. When it comes to interior design and style we share the same taste with Justin Timberlake and Jessica Alba: we love Borgo Egnazia and Singita!

Borgo Egnazia

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel chose this most idyllic location of Borgo Egnazia in the Italian village of Savelletri de Fasano in Puglia for their honeymoon. In the undiscovered corner of Italy the couple welcomed guests such as Jimmy Fallon and musician Timbaland. Borgo Egnazia is a castle-like and candle-lit dream setting for a wedding of A-list celebrities. From the resort, made of the typical white Lecce limestone, to the views of the Adriatic Sea, the surroundings, complete with olive trees and jasmine flowers, create something of a fairytale. Luxurious add-ons include a championship golf courses, two beach clubs and a fantastic spa that bases its treatments on ancient Puglian rituals.

North Island

It is no wonder Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, chose this private island for their honeymoon spot. A secluded beach, lush tropical beauty and stylish eco-friendly villas in an exotic location in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The villas blend seamlessly with their surroundings and guests share the retreat with tortoises and endangered species of birds. This is the perfect combination of beauty and privacy that draws in celebrities like David and Victoria Beckham, 10th wedding anniversary, or Salma Hayek, who was also on honeymoon here.

Devi Garh

Liz Hurley and Arun Nayar celebrated their wedding in 2004 at the Devi Garh, an 18th century palace and fort close to Udaipur in Rajasthan. For 200 years it was the royal residence of the rulers of Delwara principality. Nowadays Devi Garh has been converted in a contemporary manner while conserving the ancient exterior into one of the most exclusive boutique hotels in the world. The palace offers the last word in opulence, 4 staff members for every suite, an Ambassador car and chauffeur at hand for each guest and Indian haute cuisine. Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan or Fardeen Khan, and Indian business tycoons like the Ambani brothers are among the guests of Devi Garh.

Singita Serengeti

Everyone likes a bit of seclusion on honeymoon, but for Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel the Singita Serengeti House with its only 350,000 acres were enough. The two-bedroom house sits proudly in the African landscape flanked by two guest villas with open fire in each. Lunches and charcuterie are regularly interrupted by sightings of elephant at the nearby watering hole, herds of impala, thousands of zebra and wildebeest migrating through the region.

Claridge’s

Celebrities flock to Claridge’s for a taste of British tradition. The doormen are having a hard time to keep up with the names of the endless procession of stars popping up at this famous hotel in London. Just off New Bond Street in London Mayfair this traditional luxury hotel opened its doors in 1898. Claridge’s is a seven-storey terracotta-faced behemoth that has long been a favourite stop for statesmen, film stars, aristocrats and supermodels. Much of Claridge’s success results from an Art Deco renovation in the late 1920s. Recent guests include Kate Winslet, Poppy Delevingne, Kate Moss, Sarah Jessica Parker and Diane von Fürstenberg.

6 cool hangouts where you can sneak a peek at celebrities in Goa

Goa has long been a place that has enticed visitors. Latin influences, leftover from more than four centuries of Portuguese rule, pervade the culture, architecture, food, language and lives of everyday Goans. Locals will tell you it’s a place entirely separate from the rest of India–complete with its own mixed heritage that’s part Indian, part European. And, it’s expansive beaches and laid back, hospitable attitude have continued to draw visitors after independence.

In the sixties, it was hippies from America and Britain. Today, it’s everyone, including wealthy Indians from Mumbai and Delhi who have joined the trend of vacationing to Goa. Even celebrities flock to this tiny western Indian state, and where do they stay? At any of Goa’s wonderfully small luxury hotels.

Each hip hideaway has its own personality and taps into a different facet of Goan culture, environment and style. Hidden from the throngs of tourists that flock to Goa’s irresistible beaches, these secret pearls of hospitality are secluded and luxurious. Here are a few of the best boutique hotels where celebrities in Goa stay:

Nilaya

In Sanskrit, Nilaya means “abode in the blue” or simply, heaven. This was Goa’s first boutique hotel, opened in the 90s by hotelier Hari Ajwani and his French stylist wife, Claudia Derain. In their early years, they hosted stars as big as Mick Jagger. Today, visitors come to Nilaya to experience nature, wellness and spiritual bliss in a quiet, off-the-beaten path boutique hotel. (from 280 $, 11 rooms)

Smart travelers aren’t afraid of Tuscany in the winter: It’s hunting time

The wild boar is fresh and the cheese is rich. Truffles and mushrooms and chestnuts abound. Even in the cool temperatures of winter, when the rainy days are not uncommon, Tuscany comes alive with bright colors that put every other winter destination to shame. And, when the tourists all but disappear between the ancient cities of Florence, Pisa, Lucca and Siena – it’s then that locals come out of the woodwork, unhindered by throngs of wine-hungry crowds and restaurants serve up the season’s finest ragùs.

porc and lentils in tuscany, italy

The star of that meaty pasta sauce is the wild boar, or il cinghiale, as its known locally. Hunting season is between November and January throughout Tuscany, and locals take this season very seriously, especially when it comes to wild boar who wreak havoc on wine and other crops before harvest time is through. As an animal that is known for eating pretty much anything, the boar has few natural predators anymore, which means that Tuscans have no qualms about making sport of taking them down and cooking them up. Birds and rabbit are also hunted at this time of year.

Hotel Monteverdi

Via di Mezzo, Castiglioncello del Trinoro, 53047 Sarteano

Hotel Monteverdi is a haven on a hilltop. Its three buildings maintain their original 12th century authenticity, while the interiors (including each artistically adorned guestroom) blend modern sophistication and ancient charm. Almost exactly halfway between Rome and Florence, this may be one of the best small luxury hotels of the world. (rooms from 375 €)

Hunting is a region-wide tradition that doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere anytime soon. For travelers who are lucky enough to plan a winter visit to Tuscany, hunting is a distinct possibility, complete with traditional dress, dogs and a final feast to celebrate the hunt. And for those who opt out of the hunting and want to move straight to the eating, winter is when the dishes of the region come to life. Tuscans eat what’s in season, which means you won’t be disappointed.

Conti di San Bonifacio Wine Resort

Localita’ Casteani 1, 58023 Ribolla

Built in the traditional Tuscan style, this luxury boutique hotel and its authenticity are steeped in 1,000 years of history, with roots in the Counts of San Bonifacio – a group who later were depicted as the warring subjects of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The hotel encapsulates a true Tuscan getaway with breathtaking landscapes and the quiet charm of tradition married with the ease and comfort of modern amenities. (rooms from 240 €)

But vegans beware: while the rich late harvest olives, truffles and mushrooms do make their way into Tuscany’s hearty dishes, in the winter, the cuisine caters to meat lovers. Cinghiale, of course, is available in abundance and makes the perfect ragù. And pecorino is even said to be creamier this time of year, since sheep are munching on green pastures. Whether you’re hunting wild boar, truffles or simply great wine, Tuscany in the winter is a paradise for travelers looking to avoid crowds and understand local life at its purest. Though you won’t need to escape from snow during the winter months in Tuscany, you may still want to cozy up by the fire and sip a bold red or huddle around an aromatic dinner table with your travel companions once the days turn to dark.

Poggio Ai Santi

Via San Bartolo 100, 57027 San Vincenzo

Complete with three houses that separate the few number of guest rooms, this boutique hotel stands quietly above the seaside with a landscape of olive trees. As an adult-only escape, Poggio Ai Santi focuses on tranquility and comfort. (rooms from 149 €)

Although the countryside is filled with agrotourism accommodations as well as B&Bs and plenty of Italian Palazzi-Style luxury hotels (similar to the french Louis XIV kitsch), your chances are slim if you’re looking for a unique escape at a boutique hotel.

7 facts what a boutique hotel is NOT

There is no easy way to define boutique hotels. There are a number of qualities that these charming hotels of the world share, but they offer an experience that’s better understood in-person rather than by a definition. But, we can try to explain that “you’ll know it when you see it” feeling and where it comes from by first exploring what a boutique hotel is NOT.

If you’re staying somewhere that’s…

  1. Cookie cutter accommodations,
  2. Part of a chain,
  3. Dull, with inside-the-box design,
  4. Filled with too many rooms,
  5. Impersonal,
  6. All inclusive, or
  7. Pretty much just flat and soulless

…then you are not staying at a boutique hotel. Keep looking, though! These hip hideaways can be found almost anywhere in the world that visitors would want to go (we can personally attest to that…). In our travels, we came across more secret retreats and small luxury hotels than we can count, and while we do still believe boutique hotels are better defined through seeing than explaining, we’ve compiled a few traits they all share:

Getting this out of the way: yes, a boutique hotel is tiny, with no more than 50 rooms and no less than ten (otherwise, it would be an inn or b&b). Their size gives these great small hotels a distinct air of intimacy and personal touch that large hotels just can’t offer.

A true boutique hotel is also one-of-a-kind and independently owned. These indie hotels are distinct from cookie cutter accommodations. They have a style and personality that is truly unique and enhance their guests’ experience of the destination. Boutique hotels tend to be hip, with trend-setting clientele and forward-looking design elements. Because the décor is unique to the independent owners, it is not designed to appeal to the masses but instead a specific crowd of adventurous travelers with a taste for authenticity.

These hip hideaways are dedicated to hyper-attentive service. Because they include personal touches that large hotel chains can’t match, the best boutique hotels in the world pride themselves on their top-of-the-line, personalized service. Providing an easy and at-home atmosphere for guests is essential to the charming hotel experience. They offer great, distinct options when it comes to food and beverage. With restaurants and bars that often draw in locals, you typically won’t lack for cutting edge meals and drinks when you stay at one of these independent hotels.

A boutique hotel is not mainstream, all-inclusive or bland. It’s authentic, stylish and exclusive, unique in design and architecture, trendy, intimate, cosy and inspiring. It provides a personalized service with a real focus on the customer. And most importantly, it offers a memorable experience in itself.

So there you have it! Our attempt at answering the question, “What is a boutique hotel?” But boutique hotel lovers will attest: you have to experience it in person to really understand what it all means. Tell us about some of your favorites and why you love them in the comments below.
